Mr. President,
At the outset, Thailand would like to thank the Special Rapporteur for her oral update on the human rights situation in Myanmar.
Thailand welcomes positive developments in Myanmar and remains fully supportive of Myanmar’s efforts to bring about peace, security, and national reconciliation as well as enhance socio-economic development in the country.
We recognise the immense challenges for the Government of Myanmar to address the delicate and complex situation in Rakhine State as well as in other states and believes the international community should give time and space to Myanmar. We are nevertheless encouraged by Myanmar’s commitment to promptly implement the recommendations set forth in the Interim Report of the Advisory Commission on Rakhine State led by
Mr. Kofi Annan.
We encourage the Special Rapporteur, the OHCHR, and the international community to continue to provide technical cooperation and capacity building to help Myanmar fulfill its human rights obligations and implement relevant recommendations more effectively.
As a close neighbor and ASEAN fellow member, Thailand stands ready to support Myanmar in addressing problems at its root causes, including by providing development assistance to help improve the quality of lives of people in Rakhine State as well as sharing our practices under our home-grown development model of Sufficiency Economy Philosophy to bring about sustainable development in the area.
Thank you.
