Statement by the Delegation of Thailand

by H.E. Mr. Sek Wannamethee

Ambassador and Permanent Representative

at the Review of Bangladesh

during the 30th Session of the Working Group on the UPR

on Monday, 14 May 2018, 09:00-12:30 hrs.

(Speaker Number: 8 / Speaking Time: 1 minute 5 seconds)

Mr. Vice-President,

Thailand welcomes the delegation of Bangladesh to the third cycle of the UPR.

We applaud the adoption and amendment of laws on the rights of persons with disabilities, the rights of the child, the protection of domestic workers, the protection against torture and birth registration.

We commend Bangladesh for its humanitarian assistance provided to the displaced persons in Cox’s Bazar. We encourage the Government of Bangladesh to continue to work with the Government of Myanmar and with international organizations to ensure safe, dignified and voluntary repatriation.

We applaud Bangladesh’s efforts to prevent and suppress human trafficking – and welcome the implementation of the Sustainability Compact to promote labour rights and factory safety.

Thailand recommends the following for Bangladesh’s consideration:

First, to expedite the formulation of the Elimination of Discrimination Act.

Second, to further enhance its efforts to achieve higher enrollment ratios of girls in primary and secondary schools.

We wish Bangladesh every success in this UPR.

Thank you.
