on the situation of human rights in Myanmar (oral update)

Mr. President,
Thailand thanks the Special Rapporteur on her oral update. We reaffirm our continued support for the UN mechanisms for sustainable peace and development in Myanmar.
Thailand views that a complex situation such as in Rakhine State requires
an approach that takes into account the concerns of all relevant parties in order to build trust and confidence.
Thailand welcomes Myanmar’s engagement with the UN mechanisms, including the UNSG’s Special Envoy on Myanmar and the members of the UNSC. We also welcome Myanmar’s responsiveness to the call of the international community,
in particular, the decision to establish an Independent Commission of Enquiry to investigate the alleged human rights violations in Rakhine State, as recommended by
the Advisory Board for the Committee for the Implementation of the Recommendations on Rakhine State, as well as the signing of the MOU with UNHCR and UNDP to assist
the Government of Myanmar in implementing the Arrangement of Return of Displaced Persons from Rakhine State.
However, more can be done to address the situation more effectively. Additional humanitarian assistances are still needed, especially for those currently affected by
the monsoon. The international community should also support both Myanmar and Bangladesh to ensure that repatriation of displaced persons can take place in a safe, voluntary, dignified and sustainable manner.
More importantly, we must invest in long-term solutions that address the root causes of the problem in order to achieve peace, sustainable development and human security for all communities in Rakhine State. Thailand will continue to work closely with Myanmar, Bangladesh and the international community to realise those goals.
Thank you, Mr. President.
