Statement by the Delegation of Thailand
by Mr. Phanpob Plangprayoon
Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative
at the Review of Uruguay
during the 32nd Session of the Working Group on the UPR
on Wednesday, 23 January 2019, 09:00-12:30 hrs.
Mr. President,
Thailand welcomes the delegation of Uruguay to the UPR.
Thailand is encouraged by Uruguay’s committed efforts to promote and protect human rights.
Thailand commends Uruguay for the passage of a law in July 2018 on preventing and combatting tracking in and exploitation of persons. Thailand also applauds Uruguay’s efforts to combat gender-based violence, including the adoption of a new law.
Thailand welcomes the steps taken by Uruguay to address the issue of prison overcrowding, particularly the building of facilities for mothers and children.
As a fellow member of the Group of Friends on human rights and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, Thailand appreciates Uruguay’s role in promoting dialogue on strengthening synergies between human rights and the SDGs.
Thailand recommends the following for Uruguay’s consideration:
First, ensure the effective implementation of Act No. 19.643 on preventing and combating trafficking in and exploitation of persons, including through awareness-raising, capacity-building of law enforcement officials, and technical cooperation with international partners.
Second, further promote and protect the human rights of older persons, including by creating a conducive environment for healthy and active ageing and ensuring that older persons are not left behind in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Thailand wishes Uruguay every success in the UPR.
Thank you.
