Ireland and Thailand co-hosted the online Panel Discussion: Advancing the Complementarity of the TPNW

On 12 June 2023, Ireland and Thailand, the informal co-facilitators on Complementarity, co-hosted the online Panel Discussion: “Advancing the Complementarity of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) with the Existing Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Regime”.

Panelists included Ambassador Thani Thongphakdi, Ambassador of Thailand to the UK and former Chair of the Open-ended Working Group on Taking Forward Multilateral Nuclear Disarmament Negotiations in 2016; Ambassador Favio Soares Damico, Permanent Representative of Brazil to the Conference of Disarmament; Dr. Zia Mian, co-director of Princeton University's Program on Science and Global Security; Dr. Eirini Giorgou, Legal adviser at the International Committee of the Red Cross, Arms and Conduct of Hostilities Unit; and Ms. Alicia Sanders-Zakre, Policy and Research Coordinator, ICAN.

Viewpoints on issues of complementarity of TPWN and other nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation regimes, including transparency, verification and positive obligations, which have been mentioned since the commencement of the OEWG on Taking Forward Multilateral Nuclear Disarmament Negotiations in 2016 were presented and analyzed from the panelists area of expertise.

The discussion also highlighted that the TPNW benefits both State Parties and Non-State Parties, as it is integrally linked with various international instruments on disarmament, and also those on human rights and sustainable development.

Ireland and Thailand reaffirm their commitment and their readiness to work with State Parties and other interested actors on complementarity and other relevant issues to promote an ongoing dialogue and cooperation toward the preparation of the 2nd Meeting of State Parties of the TPNW in New York this year.
