Thailand presented the report on the Complementarity of the TPNW to other disarmament and non-proliferation regimes at the 2nd Meeting of State Parties of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.

On 1 December 2023, Thailand and Ireland, co-facilitators on the Complementarity of the TPNW, jointly presented the report on the Complementarity of the TPNW to other disarmament and non-proliferation regimes (the Report) with a view to further explore and articulate possible areas of tangible cooperation between the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) and the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), and other relevant nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation instruments, in particular Nuclear Weapons Free Zones treaties, at the 2nd Meeting of States Parties to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (MSP).

The Report reflected views and comments drawn from activities and engagements between the co-facilitators and various stakeholders as they examined and considered how to advance the complementarity between the Prohibition Treaty, the Non-Proliferation Treaty and other disarmament and non-proliferation instruments during the 1st MSP in 2022 and the 2nd MSP.

The co-facilitators proposed a number of recommendations which would contribute to the more effective implementation of the Vienna Action Plan, including by engaging and cooperating with all stakeholders, including the Scientific Advisory Working Group and expanding other international bodies including the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization, the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Committee established pursuant to Resolution 1540.

At the conclusion of the 2nd MSP Ireland and Thailand were reappointed as informal facilitators between the 2nd and the 3rd MSP 2025. We look forwards to working with all stakeholders to further strengthen the issue of complementarity, especially the positive acceptance of the Prohibition Treaty which will aid and further its universalization.
