Statement by the Delegation of Thailand
H.E. Mr. Thani Thongphakdi
Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Thailand
at the 25th Special Session of the Human Rights Council on
the deteriorating situation of human rights in the
Syrian Arab Republic, and the recent situation in Aleppo,
on Friday, 21 October 2016, at Room XX, Palais des Nations
Mr. Vice-President,
Thailand remains seriously concerned about the deteriorating situation in Syria and condemns all violations of human rights, especially given the intensification of attacks, particularly those against civilians and medical facilities.
All parties concerned should respect international humanitarian law and provide humanitarian access to victims of hostilities. Of utmost importance is the need to effectively protect civilians.
In this regard, my delegation calls upon all States and international organizations to strengthen measures to help specific groups, such as women, children, persons with disabilities and minorities, whose rights are more precarious than ever in the conflict situation.
I also wish to take this opportunity to express our appreciation and support for the hard work done by the Commission of Inquiry (COI) and hope that it receives the cooperation it needs to effectively carry out its mandate, helping to ensure accountability and end impunity.
Thailand reiterates its firm belief that there is no military solution to the conflict. The international community must intensify its efforts to achieve a peaceful and sustainable solution by promoting inclusive political dialogue between all the parties concerned at the earliest opportunity.
I thank you, Mr. Vice-President.
