Statement by the Delegation of Thailand

H.E. Mr. Sasiwat Wongsinsawat

Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of Thailand

at the Review of Venezuela

during the 26th Session of the Working Group on
the Universal Periodic Review

on Tuesday 1 November 2016 from 9:00 to 12:30 hrs

Mr. President,

Thailand warmly welcomes the delegation of Venezuela to the second cycle of the UPR. We commend the progress made by Venezuela, in particular,
the effort to broaden its legal framework for the promotion and protection of human rights and to provide human rights education for government officials and civil society organizations. We applaud the adoption of the first National Human Rights Plan and encourage Venezuela to ensure its full and effective implementation.

We recognize the constraints on resources placed by the economic crisis in Venezuela, such as shortages of medical equipment and electricity supplies, and the possible impact on public services.

Thailand recommends Venezuela to take all necessary measures to ensure the right to food, water and sanitation of its people as well as continued basic medical supplies and health services.

Furthermore, we recommend Venezuela to continue combatting all forms of discrimination and promoting gender equality.

I thank you, Mr. President.
