Statement by the Delegation of Thailand

H.E. Mr. Sasiwat Wongsinsawat

Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative

Item 10: Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur

on the situation of human rights in Cambodia

at the 36th Session of the Human Rights Council

on Wednesday 27 September 2017, Room XX

Mr. President,

Let me begin by thanking the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Cambodia for her report. Thailand commends Cambodia for its cooperation extended to the Special Rapporteur and the OHCHR.

We welcome the commitments and progress made by Cambodia, particularly in the Action Plan for Improving Child Care, the National Strategic Plan of Identification for the minorities, along with the preparation for Cambodia’s strategy to implement SDGs. We also welcome Cambodia’s ongoing positive efforts in reforming its educational and judicial systems, in line with its accepted UPR recommendations.

As a close neighbour and fellow ASEAN member, Thailand will continue to cooperate closely with Cambodia. In this regard and in the spirit of Agenda Item 10, we welcome Cambodia’s participation in a recent ASEAN workshop on education for out-of-school children and and a seminar on combating transnational crime hosted by Thailand. This reflects our shared commitment to turn human rights standards into concrete action.

Thailand reaffirms our readiness to support Cambodia in the field of human rights promotion and protection to ensure that no one is left behind.

Thank you, Mr. President.
