Mr. President,
First of all, Thailand wishes to express its appreciation for the efforts of the Fact Finding Mission on Myanmar (FFM).

Thailand also welcomes Myanmar’s steps taken to uphold the rule of law, justice and accountability as reflected in its recent establishment of the Independent Commission of Enquiry to investigate the human rights violations in Rakhine State. We believe that a dialogue between the FFM and the Myanmar authorities concerned, as well as careful reflections on some useful elements in the FFM’s report, will enable the Independent Commission of Enquiry to produce legitimate and credible outcomes.

Thailand shares common interest with every stakeholder in supporting Myanmar’s efforts to achieve peace, irreversible national reconciliation and democratic transition. Therefore, we wish to encourage the international community to remain engaged with Myanmar, using a constructive and balanced approach to the complex and pressing challenges Myanmar is facing.

Given that inter-communal harmony can be created and sustained from within, Thailand will continue to work closely with Myanmar, alongside our ASEAN fellows and other like–minded countries, to foster inclusive development in Myanmar, with an aim to build mutual trust among all local communities and create an environment conducive for the safe and sustainable return of displaced persons from Bangladesh.

At the same time, Thailand will intensify our efforts to assist Bangladesh in addressing its on-going humanitarian crisis, as it is our shared responsibility to ensure the safety, dignity and wellbeing of those displaced persons.

Thank you.
